Rock Up for Randall – A brief history

Rock Up for Randall is our annual charity event held in memory of David — a beloved friend whose passion for cricket and music continues to inspire everything we do.
The very first event took place in 2011 while David was battling terminal cancer. None of us will ever forget the look of surprise and awe on his face as he rounded the corner at Drapers Farm Sports Ground that August bank holiday Sunday. Seeing the crowd, the volunteers, and the effort made in his honour set the tone for what has since become a much-loved tradition.
Cricket, Community & Camaraderie

In the early years, the day began with a Kwik Cricket festival featuring local youth clubs — with some teams travelling from as far as East London. As the event evolved, adult matches took centre stage, including T20 games between senior colts and adults, the classic “Dads vs Lads” match, and even The Hundred-style games.

Whatever the weather, we’ve always found a way to play — and when rain tried to stop play, spontaneous bowl-offs in the nets and foam slides kept the fun going!
Music that Moves Us
Live music has always been at the heart of Rock Up for Randall. Our very own party band, 6String Makeover, have been with us every year. We’ve hosted tribute acts including Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury, and more, alongside talent competitions that shine a light on amazing local performers.

A Day of Fun for All Ages
The event has grown into a full community celebration. From “It’s a Knockout” competitions, climbing walls, and human football tables to bouncy castles and face painting — there’s something for everyone. Even during the challenges of Covid-19, we kept the spirit alive with a scaled-back, safe version of the event.

Making a Difference
Each year, raffles and auctions raise vital funds for the David Randall Foundation (DRF). Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve offered prizes such as signed sporting memorabilia, golf days, experience packages, holidays in Austria and Portugal, and tickets to top events.
These efforts support our “Good Days” program — providing special experiences for those in Essex living with life-limiting conditions — and fund scholarships for promising young athletes and musicians, helping them reach their full potential.
